Lisboa Card FAQ

The Lisboa Card is Lisbon's official tourist card. With it you get free entry to over 50 sights, free use of public transport and discounts at many more attractions, tours and experiences.

The card is issued by the official tourism association Turismo de Lisboa. It is personal and valid for 24, 48 or 72 hours.

There are three versions, which differ only in how long they are valid. What they include is identical:

• 24 hours: for short stopovers or a single active day.
• 48 hours: the most popular version, a good balance between sightseeing, several attractions and downtime.
• 72 hours: ideal for travellers with a day trip to Sintra or a full city programme.

Children under 4 do not need a separate card and are free at most attractions and on public transport anyway.

Yes, there are two age bands with different terms:

• Ages 4 to 15: separate child card at a reduced price (see the price table above).
• Under 4: no separate card needed, entry to almost all attractions and public transport are free anyway.

There is no official family ticket. The card is still worthwhile for families, because besides entry fees it also covers all public transport journeys for every cardholder. One exception: at some attractions, such as the Castelo de São Jorge, the Padrão dos Descobrimentos and the Museu do Fado, free entry does not apply to 13 to 15-year-olds.

You can get the card in two ways:

• Online (recommended): voucher by email straight away, free cancellation up to 24 hours before, 28 days to collect in Lisbon from your chosen collection date.
• On site: at the official Ask Me Lisboa and Ask Me Sintra tourist offices (e.g. at the airport, Cais do Sodré, Terreiro do Paço).

Buying online has the advantage that you lock in the current price straight away and risk nothing if your travel plans change.

That means you can secure the voucher now, even if your travel plans are not 100% settled yet.

Unfortunately, no refund is possible if the card is lost. The card is personal and tied to the physical card as its carrier. Without it, entitlement to entry cannot be proven.

Practical tip: keep the voucher email until you activate the card, and after activation keep the card safe in your main bag or wallet, not in an exposed outer pocket.

Yes. You can order as many cards as you like in one purchase and receive several vouchers in one email. When you collect in Lisbon, they are exchanged for the matching number of physical cards.

Each card is personal: at activation, each holder writes their name, the date and the time on it. Passing it on to other people is not allowed.

After buying online you receive a voucher by email straight away. You exchange it in Lisbon for the physical Lisboa Card. Without this card you cannot use it.

The main collection points:

• Lisbon Airport: Ask Me Lisboa, daily 7am–10pm.
• City centre: Terreiro do Paço, daily 10am–7pm.

There are more official Ask Me points, including an outpost in Sintra. After your chosen collection date you have 28 days to collect.

You activate the card yourself when you want to use it for the first time. Before first use, you write on the back:

• First and last name of the cardholder.
• Date and time of first use.

From that written time, the validity (24, 48 or 72 hours) runs continuously. According to the official brochure, you validate the card on your first journey on a reader on public transport. After that, the card can be shown at participating attractions and on public transport.

Validity does not start at purchase, only at first use.

That is the moment you first validate the card on a reader on public transport, for example on the metro or a bus. From then on the number of hours you chose runs continuously, regardless of the calendar day. You can activate the card up to a year after purchase.

Example: a 48-hour card activated on Monday at 10am is valid until Wednesday at 10am, including overnight.

At participating attractions you show the card at the entrance or the ticket desk. You either get in directly or receive a free ticket on showing the card.

On public transport you use the card at the turnstile or when boarding, like a normal ticket. On buses, trams and funiculars show it to the driver or at the validator; on the metro scan it at the turnstile.

At most attractions you simply go to the entrance, show the card and get in, with no advance booking.

Exception: Torre de Belém and Mosteiro dos Jerónimos both require a prior online reservation. No entry without a reservation.

Step-by-step guide

Alternative without the card: if having to collect the card first feels too uncertain, you can book Torre and monastery in advance as a Belém bundle directly with Tiqets (more on the reservation page).

At other popular attractions (e.g. Castelo de São Jorge) there may be queues in high season. An online reservation is not possible with the Lisboa Card here. It is best to come early in the morning or shortly before closing.

The card is valid every day, 24/7. You do need to check the individual opening hours of the attractions, though.

Most important practical point: many museums are closed on Mondays.

So if you only have 24 or 48 hours, plan Monday deliberately for transport-heavy activities (Tram 28, Castelo, viewpoints) rather than museum visits.

The official brochure does not explicitly cover repeat visits. Assume you can visit each attraction once for free, and ask at the ticket desk if in doubt.

Public transport journeys, on the other hand, are unlimited for the whole validity period.

Yes. The card is only valid for the person whose name was written on the back at activation. Passing it on to other people is not allowed. ID may be requested in spot checks.

At some attractions yes, at many no. There is no official skip-the-line status for the Lisboa Card.

Faster entry is typically available where the card is shown directly at the entrance (Panteão Nacional, Palácio Nacional da Ajuda, smaller museums). At very busy top attractions such as the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, an early visit right after opening helps more.

The Oceanário de Lisboa is not included free of charge. As a Lisboa Card holder you do get 15% off the entry price.

If you definitely want to visit the Oceanário, consider whether a dedicated combined ticket would be better than the discount.

Yes, you can take the metro from the airport to the centre for free. The red line (Vermelha) has a station right at the airport terminal. By changing to the green or blue line you can reach almost any central point in the city.

• Included: metro from the airport to the city centre.
• Not included: the airport bus "Aerobus".

No. Classic city tours and hop-on hop-off bus tours are not part of the included package. With the Lisboa Card you do get a discount on the ticket price: 25% at City Sightseeing, 15% at Cityrama and 10% at Yellow Bus.

A good free alternative: Tram 28 runs through all the main old-town districts and is part of the card's transport package.

Yes, the suburban trains to Sintra (CP line from Rossio station) and to Cascais (CP line from Cais do Sodré) are included free of charge.

• Included: CP trains to Sintra and Cascais (unlimited return journeys during validity).
• Not included: local buses in Sintra and Cascais. For these you need separate tickets, e.g. the Bilhete de Bordo.

Yes, Tram 28 and all other historic trams are included without limit.

The Lisboa Card covers unlimited use of the metro and all CARRIS services: buses, regular and historic trams (including the popular line 28) and the three funiculars Lavra, Glória and Bica. The Elevador de Santa Justa is included too. Die Standseilbahnen und der Elevador sind derzeit allerdings außer Betrieb.

Rule of thumb: with 2–3 major attractions a day plus regular use of public transport, you usually break even on the first day.

In practice, if you have Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, Castelo de São Jorge or Panteão Nacional on your plan and regularly use the metro, trams or buses, you benefit straight away.

The card is less suitable if:

• You only stroll around the city and do not head for paid attractions.
• You only visit 1–2 attractions and have no need for public transport.
• You spend most of your time in Sintra or Cascais. There are hardly any free attractions there, only the free train.

There are two ways to check how much you would actually save:

With only 1–2 attractions, the card usually only pays off if you also use public transport heavily, that is, make several bus, metro or tram journeys a day.

Rule of thumb: from two major attractions plus 4–6 public transport journeys a day, a 24-hour card more than pays for itself. With three or more attractions it is almost always worth it.

Yes, Torre de Belém has reopened to visitors after its renovation. Entry is included in the Lisboa Card as normal.

Important: an online reservation is compulsory, with no entry without a prior reservation. The reservation is free only for Lisboa Card holders. Condition: you must already have collected the physical card.
