Belem, city center and Alfama
Activation of the map, the big highlights, in the evening in the old town
Mosteiro dos Jeronimos
Start in Belem with the masterpiece of Manueline architecture. Come directly to the opening at 9:30 am - the monastery gets very crowded around noon. Allow about 60 to 90 minutes. Activate your Lisboa Card here - from now on the 48-hour clock is running.
Museu Nacional dos Coches
The world's largest collection of historic carriages in a modern museum building right next door. Less crowded than the monastery and visually impressive. Allow about 45 to 60 minutes.
Torre de Belem
Lisbon's landmark is located directly on the banks of the Tagus and can be reached on foot from the monastery. The Manueline fortified tower from the 16th century is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Torre is currently closed for renovation (probably until June 2026) - but it is also worth a visit from the outside. After the reopening, you can enter free of charge with the Lisboa Card.
Praca do Comercio and Baixa
The imposing square on the waterfront is the gateway to the city center. Stroll through the Rua Augusta and climb up to the viewing terrace of the Arc de Triomphe - the view over the Baixa and the Tagus is well worth it. The Elevador de Santa Justa is also nearby and offers a great view over the rooftops.
Castelo de Sao Jorge
The Moorish castle towers over the old town and offers the best panorama of Lisbon. Allow at least an hour for the viewpoints, the archaeological site and a walk through the castle grounds and surrounding gardens.
Explore Alfama
From the Castelo, narrow alleyways lead down through Alfama, Lisbon's oldest district. Let yourself drift - there is no fixed plan here. Miradouros (viewpoints) such as the Miradouro de Santa Luzia or the Miradouro das Portas do Sol are along the way and offer fantastic views.
Panteao Nacional
The National Pantheon on the edge of Alfama rewards you with one of the most beautiful rooftop terraces in Lisbon. From here you can see the Tagus, the Alfama rooftops and all the way over to Cacilhas. Allow about 30 minutes - the Panteão closes at 18:00 in summer and at 17:00 in winter.
Chiado, museums and the banks of the Tagus
Culture, creative Lisbon and the last hours with the card
Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga
Portugal's most important art museum houses works ranging from Hieronymus Bosch to Japanese Nambam paravents. The garden overlooking the Tagus is worth the visit alone. Come early - you'll be almost alone here in the morning. Allow about 60 to 90 minutes.
Chiado and Principe Real
The elegant Chiado district around Rua Garrett is the cultural heart of Lisbon - bookshops, cafés, small galleries. From here, a pleasant walk uphill leads to Principe Real with its shady garden and the botanical gardens of the University of Lisbon.
Parque das Nacoes
The former Expo site on the eastern bank of the river is the modern face of Lisbon. The architecture around the Oriente train station (designed by Santiago Calatrava) is worth seeing on its own. Along the promenade you will find parks, sculptures and a cable car with a view of the river.
The Oceanario de Lisboa - one of the best aquariums in Europe - is also located right here. It's not free with the Lisboa Card, but you get 20 % Reduction.
Time Out Market and Cais do Sodre
The Time Out Market in the Mercado da Ribeira market hall brings together the best chefs in Lisbon under one roof. Ideal for a late lunch or a snack. Afterwards, it's worth taking a stroll along the banks of the Tagus.
Ferry to Cacilhas - sunset
Perfect ending: the ferry from Cais do Sodré to Cacilhas takes just 10 minutes and offers the best view of Lisbon's skyline. Once you arrive on the south bank, you will find restaurants with terraces and panoramic views right on the pier. Note: The ferry is not included in the Lisboa Card - a ticket costs around €1.50 per trip (Viva Viagem card available from the ticket machine).
